Toigo Orchards, Shippensburg PA
----

Toigo Orchards in Shippensburg Pennsylvania is situated on acreage within close proximity to major markets like New York City and the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. The area was originally settled in the mid 1700’s because of its mild climate and fertile soil, rich in limestone. Mark Toigo’s parents purchased the farm in the 1960’s and have made a gradual transition from fruit and grains to primarily fruit orchards. They grow 100’s of varieties and are always testing new, promising ones. The Orchard is primarily apple, peach and pear trees but they also have several acres devoted to melon, strawberry, blackberry and raspberry production.

With Integrated Pest Management (IPM) systems in place, Toigo Orchards is proud to offer fruit that can be eaten right off the tree. This is an increasingly popular approach to controlling pest populations while causing the least amount of risk to people and the environment by using preventative measures and non-toxic controls . Pheromones are introduced to throw off breeding cycles of mating insects. Beneficial predatory insects are also used. By employing a variety of pest control options Toigo is able to drastically reduce the use of chemical pesticides..
