Blood Oranges

Keany Produce Item #15090

You may be surprised when you cut this orange and see the profound crimson color inside. The blood orange’s unique, rich color is due to Anhocyanin, a powerful pigment that exists in red and purple fruits and vegetables and can protect the human body from many diseases. Anthocyanins are uncommon in citrus fruits, with the blood orange being one of the exceptions. These oranges are definitely taste pleasers, and are exceptional in presentation for a variety of dishes. They make an ordinary citrus salad dramatic, add interest to smoothies and salsas and are a perfect addition for Holiday mimosas.
The flesh of the blood orange varies in depth depending on the growing area. The skin pigment on the outside is also darkens as the fruit ripens. They usually mature mid-season and are extremely juicy and sweet. These kinds of oranges are usually smaller than an average orange.
Blood oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, folic acid, anthocyanins, calcium and Vitamin A, among other minerals and vitamins. They are rich in antioxidants and are a very good source of fiber. The levels of vitamin C are higher on these oranges compared to regular oranges.
This winter fruit is usually available late December thru early May.

Enjoy!
